NEW GIGASATS FOR IP-UPLINKS
IP-Uplinks' acquisition of two new GigaSat vehicle mounted satellite dishes is part of a major expansion program for the Singapore-Perth based SNG provider.
IP-Uplinks is buying one GigaSat DA-150 roof mounted dish and a DA-100 fly-drive unit to enhance its current KU services in Australia.
"The DA-150 will be mounted on our new Mercedes Sprinter based vehicle for KU SNG services in Western Australia while the DA-100 will primarily have a role operating from SUVs in varying locations both in Australia and overseas," said IP-Uplinks Managing Director Graeme Shenton.
"These will complement our existing fleet of powerful C and KU band flyaways and fixed dishes at some sporting venues."
The IP-Uplinks MD said the company's news Sprinter vehicle would also feature an advanced multi-view transmission system with integrated network management and a number of other state-of-the-art enhancements which would include a transition to high definition transmission as customer demand in this area increased.
The SUV project was primarily aimed at providing greater flexibility for deployment in regional areas and was aimed primarily at the news delivery market.
"While much of our work is at the higher end of the broadcast news and sport sector, we have felt that we needed small dish technology to improve our fast deployment capability," Mr Shenton said.
In Australia in particular, SNG vehicles by definition operate from capital cities which in such a large country means long traveling times to the more remote areas…and by road this can mean 24-36 hours. We have traditionally used larger flyaways to resolve this problem but the fly-drive concept now provides other faster possibilities.
It is also possible that we could deploy this unit overseas although the KU Band is not entirely suitable to Asia due to its well understood limitations in tropical weather.
New technologies have also enabled significant system weight savings for the entire fleet.
IP-Uplinks chose GigaSat after an extensive analysis of the fly-drive antenna market.
"Initially we purchased a GigaSat FA-180 in 2005 which has now been the workhorse of our Western Australian operation. We have confidence in the support provided by GigaSat Asia-Pacific through its Canberra office which has kept this unit on the air whenever required," said Mr Shenton.
In the same year GigaSat also provided IP-Uplinks' Singapore parent company with a 2.4 metre unit on a temporary basis which was used extensively to deliver television coverage of the aftermath of the Tsunami which devastated the Indonesian Island province of Aceh.
"We have operated GigaSat equipment as part of our flyaway fleet for several years now and believe the company provides a good combination of quality and after sales service . Our experience to date has shown that the GigaSat units are well designed, durable and light, three very important factors in deploying mobile satellite transmission systems."
IP-Uplinks has also had a policy of ensuring that its equipment base remains relatively modern and flexible and therefore we are continuously seeking to upgrade the services that can be offered to our customers which include many of the key broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific region.
"Much of our equipment is interchangeable allowing us to vary machine configurations in C or KU band and tailor encoding and transmission systems to match customer requirements."
